NSW Planning Reforms Could Make Home Building Faster
NSW Planning Reforms

NSW Planning Reforms are set to streamline the home building approval process across the state, with the NSW Government announcing proposed changes designed to reduce assessment timeframes for residential developments.

Under the proposed changes, some low-risk residential developments could receive approval in as little as 20 days through an expanded complying development pathway. Other low-rise housing projects, including single homes, terraces, and townhouses, may be assessed within approximately 50 days under a new Targeted Assessment Pathway.

According to the NSW Government, these reforms focus on one- to two-storey residential developments, which make up around 70% of development applications in NSW. The goal is to reduce unnecessary delays while still maintaining planning and construction compliance standards.

What NSW Planning Reforms Mean for the Construction Industry

The reforms also continue NSW’s broader push toward increasing housing supply and supporting low- and mid-rise housing developments in well-connected communities.

For many construction professionals, changing planning requirements and approval processes can impact project timelines and coordination. Staying informed about industry reforms and compliance updates is becoming increasingly important as the construction sector continues to evolve.

At Builders Institute, we support students and industry professionals by providing practical training that helps build knowledge in construction planning, project coordination, contracts, compliance, and building industry processes relevant to today’s construction environment.
